Suuuuuuuper Sentai...SPIRITS! - Somewhere It's Showa

About Suuuuuuuper Sentai...SPIRITS!

Previous Entry Suuuuuuuper Sentai...SPIRITS! Dec. 2nd, 2008 @ 12:30 am Next Entry
Still spinning after a whirlwind of a weekend...! Saturday started with a field trip to the Tokyo Dome City's Sky Theater for its fourth "Engine Sentai Go-onger" hero show (I shot some video there and posted a couple clips on YouTube), followed by the "Super Sentai Spirits III: The 20th Century Version" concert, and then unwinding with friends over a nice meal at a beef specialty place. Things got rolling again Sunday at noon with a solid-sentai karaoke party in Shibuya, and then it was on to nearby venue Shibuya O-East for the dynamite "21st Century Version" conclusion of Super Sentai Spirits III...!

Unlike the past two Super Sentai Spirits concerts, this third edition unfortunately was not filmed for DVD, and no plans for a CD release were announced. (What does seem like a candidate for a DVD or CD release is the "Project.R 1st Live: Song Grand Prix" concert slated for February 11, also at Shibuya O-East. From the full-page flyer distributed at Super Sentai Spirits, it looks like this event just might include every "Go-onger" song there is! Project.R's pile of members will be joined by special guests Akira Kushida, MoJo, and Takayuki Miyauchi. This is a super-short-notice event; advance tickets are on sale today through Friday via Birthday Song, with regular tickets through the regular vendors starting Dec. 13. More info is on the events list at Anison Central.)

And nowww...the set lists (and a few observations)!

SUPER SENTAI SPIRITS III: The 20th Century Version
November 29, 2008 at Shibuya O-East, Shibuya, Tokyo
Featuring Isao Sasaki, Mitsuko Horie, MoJo, Ken Narita, Akira Kushida, Takayuki Miyauchi, KAGE/Hironobu Kageyama, Taku Kitahara, Kenji Suzuki, New Jack Takurou, Kentarou Hayami, and Shin'ichi Ishihara, with the Kinds, Apple Pie, Super Rescue Band, and emcee Shocker OH!NO!
1. Miyo!! Goranger (Goranger ins): Isao Sasaki
[After the first notes rang out, the crowd's roar almost drowned out the song's next few moments: Not only is this a great piece that was made all the greater by a top-form Sasaki, but also, it meant some rarely-performed insert songs might be ahead...something a good many fans were hungry to hear!]
2. JAKQ Dengekitai (JAKQ op): Isao Sasaki
3. Battle Fever J Alternate Version (Battle Fever J op): MoJo
4. Aa Denshi Sentai Denjiman (Denjiman op): Ken Narita
["Ken-san," who'd been persuaded to return to anison action after observing Super Sentai Spirits II from the balcony in 2006, was greeted with a deafening welcome! The crowd backed him up throughout the song just as loudly, and roared again as Shocker OH!NO! performed the Denjiman team's poses.]
5. Tatakau Denshi Sentai Denjiman (Denjiman op): Ken Narita
[Shibuya O-East was absolutely cram-packed, all the way to the back of the venue. Maybe with that in mind, Narita-san--not the tallest fellow in the world--parked himself on top of the riser at the rear of the stage for much of the song, giving those short of stature or buried in the back the chance for their longest look at a performer.]
6. Denjiman ni Makasero! (Denjiman end): Ken Narita
7. Taiyou Sentai Sunvulcan (Sunvulcan op): Akira Kushida
[Between the first and second verses, Shocker powered through the Sunvulcan team poses...prompting a roar from the extra-loud crowd that startled Qu-cy, normally bomb-proof on this song, into starting Verse 2 with lines from Verse 1!]
8. Tatakau Nakama Sunvulcan (Sunvulcan ins): Akira Kushida
[Ohhhhh, did folks go crazy...!]
9. 1tasu 2tasu Sunvulcan (Sunvulcan end): Akira Kushida
10. Dai Sentai Goggle V Alternate Version (Goggle V op): MoJo
11. Shutsugeki! Goggle Robo (Goggle V ins): MoJo
[When people joined in on the harmony by the hundreds, wowww, what a glorious sound...]
12. Stop The Battle (Goggle V end): MoJo
13. Kagaku Sentai Dynaman (Dynaman op): MoJo
14. Matteitanda Dynaman (Dynaman ins): MoJo
[I got a little concerned that the guys in front of me were going to die of happiness...!]
15. Choudenshi Bioman (Bioman op): Takayuki Miyauchi
16. Colorful Bioman (Bioman op): Takayuki Miyauchi
[Another rarely-performed insert song that had the crowd cheering!]
17. Biomic Soldier (Bioman end): Takayuki Miyauchi
18. Dengeki Sentai Changeman (Changeman): KAGE
[When Kageyama-san (who'd performed under the name "KAGE" in those cheerful Changeman days of '85) took the stage, the energy got ramped up even higher!]
19. NEVER STOP Changeman (Changeman end): KAGE
20. Choushinsei Flashman (Flashman op): Taku Kitahara
21. Heart wa Hanabi sa, Flashman (Flashman ins): Taku Kitahara
[Kitahara-san had announced that this song would be series end theme "Fighting Pose, Flashman"...but the band had other ideas. ;^) ]
22. Hikari Sentai Maskman (Maskman op): Hironobu Kageyama
23. Ai no Soldier (Maskman end): Hironobu Kageyama
24. Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman (Fiveman op): Kenji Suzuki
[Today the world's most musically masterful wedding photographer, Suzuki-san grabbed a moment to have the crowd pose for a photo for his diary on Japanese social site Mixi.]
25. Atsui Beat de Fiveman (Fiveman ins): Kenji Suzuki
26. Choujin Sentai Jetman (Jetman op): Hironobu Kageyama
[As part of his introduction for the song, Shocker warned the front rows to watch out in case Kageyama came tumbling into them; last December, Kage-chan had accidentally slid off the same stage in spectacular style at the start of a "Jetman" performance!]
27. Kokoro wa Tamago (Jetman end): Hironobu Kageyama
28. Gosei Sentai Dairanger (Dairanger op): New Jack Takurou
[NJT got his long locks buzzed off earlier this year, which is unfortunate--but unlike Samson, his power is plenty intact!]
29. Oretachi Muteki sa!! Dairanger (Dairanger end): New Jack Takurou
30. Ole! Ohranger (Ohranger op): Kentarou Hayami
[Hayami-san made a striking first appearance--what a great voice! In the '90s he performed several other anime and hero songs (some under the name Norihiko Tanimoto, including the openings for "Rai" and "Iron Leaguer"), and Shocker told us we'll be seeing more of Hayami-san at future events!]
31. Kinkyuu Hasshin!! Ohranger (Ohranger end): Kentarou Hayami
32. Kyuukyuu Sentai Go Go V (Go Go V op): Shin'ichi Ishihara
[Ishihara-san has picked up the nickname "Gorgeous"--and mannn, he put on a gorgeous two-song show!]
33. Go! Five Go! Fight (Go Go V ins): Shin'ichi Ishihara
34. Hana no Momoranger (Goranger ins): Mitsuko Horie
[Micchi is already a mondo crowd-pleaser--and with this beautiful insert song to deliver, she was one of the biggest hits in a night of huge ones!]
35. Goranger Storm (Goranger ins): Isao Sasaki, Mitsuko Horie
[The thrills continued into the homestretch of the show! The first Super Sentai Spirits had been all opening and end themes. The second SSS had tried three insert songs, all enthusiastically received. This night, there were 11 insert songs--and the crowd was near delirious!]
36. Susume! Goranger (Goranger end): Isao Sasaki, Mitsuko Horie
ENCORE 37. Himitsu Sentai Goranger (Goranger end): Isao Sasaki and all cast

SUPER SENTAI SPIRITS III: The 21st Century Version
November 30, 2008 at Shibuya O-East, Shibuya, Tokyo
Featuring Yukio Yamagata, Salia, Hideaki Takatori, Hironobu Kageyama, Masaaki Endou, Akira Kushida, Psychic Lover, Isao Sasaki, Takafumi Iwasaki, Sister MAYO, NoB, Takayoshi Tanimoto, Ichirou Mizuki, Hideyuki Takahashi, and Project .R (Takayoshi Tanimoto, Sister MAYO, Hideyuki Takahashi, Hideaki Takatori, Mayumi Gojo, Takafumi Iwasaki, YOFFY, IMAJO, Ken'ichirou Ooishi), with the Kinds, Apple Pie, Super Rescue Band, and emcee Shocker OH!NO!
1. Gaoranger Hoero!! (Gaoranger op): Yukio Yamagata
[What an opening! Yamagata-san not only growled, howled, and strutted, he also spun and swung a huge naval-version kyokujitsuki rising-sun flag on a pole all through the song in ultra-kakkoii color-guard style!]
2. Kizuna -Spirit of GaoRanger- (Gaoranger ins): Yukio Yamagata, Salia
[This funky give-and-take tune became even more fun when Yamagata-san got so carried away by the beat, he blew his singing spot that starts the second verse--dancing around as the music went on without him, and then getting startled out of it when grinning Salia sang her line on cue, hee!]
3. Healin' You (Gaoranger end): Salia
4. Hurricaneger Sanjou! (Hurricaneger op): Hideaki Takatori
[I've only been lucky enough to see Takatori-san in the Super Sentai concerts; his super-high energy is electrifying every time!]
5. Kaze yo, Mizu yo, Daichi yo (Hurricaneger ins): Hideaki Takatori
[Every bit as supercharged!]
6. Ima Kaze no Naka de (Hurricaneger end): Hironobu Kageyama
[Kage-chan kept things hot, delivering this with extra intensity!]
7. Bakuryuu Sentai Abaranger (Abaranger op): Masaaki Endou
[Well, you know "Etchi" wasn't about to be outdone...wow!!]
8. Dinoguts ga Tomaranai (Abaranger ins): Hironobu Kageyama
[The crowd went absolutely wild!]
9. ABARE-SPIRIT FOREVER (Abaranger ins): Akira Kushida
[I've heard fans sing this at karaoke, but this was the first time to hear it by the man himself!]
10. We are the ONE -Bokura wa Hitotsu- (Abaranger end): Akira Kushida
11. Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (Dekaranger op): Psychic Lover
[Always a highlight! (Joe even delivered some licks smack-dab in the center of my sightline, woo-hoo!)]
12. Dekaranger Action (Dekaranger ins): Psychic Lover
[Another mondo crowd-pleaser!]
13. Dekamaster NEVER STOP (Dekaranger ins): Isao Sasaki
14. Midnight Dekaranger (Dekaranger end): Isao Sasaki
[Mannn, Sasaki-san rocked every ounce of swing in this thing!]
15. Mahou Sentai Magiranger (Magiranger op): Takafumi Iwasaki
[Iwasaki-san (who also wrote this tune) always looks so happy to be there...!]
16. Mahou no JUMON (Magiranger ins): Takafumi Iwasaki, Sister MAYO
[Hadn't heard this before. Cute!]
17. Majin Gattai! Magiking (Magiranger ins): Masaaki Endou
18. Jumon Kourin -Magical Force- (Magiranger end): Sister MAYO
[I've long feared this song. Deeply. But this time I feared it a little less--which is either a good sign, or a very, very bad one...]
19. Gougou Sentai Boukenger (Boukenger op): NoB
[What, no mike-stand whirling...? Who are you, and what have you done with NoB?! ;^) ]
20. Boukenger GO ON FIGHTING! (Boukenger ins): NoB
[Another super-popular insert song!]
21. Boukensha ON THE ROAD (Boukenger end): Psychic Lover
[Holy cats, Yoffy was able to hold the final note 'til the music ended...!]
22. Juuken Sentai Gekiranger (Gekiranger op): Takayoshi Tanimoto
[Here's what especially bites about no DVD release for this concert: This hasn't had a live recording yet. Arrggh...]
23. Burning up! -Jounetsu o Uketsui de- (Gekiranger ins): Ichirou Mizuki, Takayoshi Tanimoto
[Aniki's arrival prompted a huge welcome from the crowd!]
24. Chikai (Gekiranger ins): Ichirou Mizuki
[Wowwww...!]
25. Tao (Gekiranger end): Ichirou Mizuki
26. Engine Sentai Go-onger (Go-onger op): Hideyuki Takahashi
[With the place roaring all around him, Takahashi-san was grinning in almost maniacal glee for most of the song. Think his expression meant, "This has got to be a dream...and I don't want to wake up!"]
27. Engine First Lap -Type Normal- (Go-onger end): Project.R (Takayoshi Tanimoto, Sister MAYO, Ken'ichirou Ooishi)
[Mannn, the folks up front all seemed to know the entire dance...first time that night I was glad to have wound up about halfway back in the hall...]
28. Engine Second Lap -TURBO CUSTOM- (Go-onger end): Project.R (Takayoshi Tanimoto, Sister MAYO, Hideyuki Takahashi, Hideaki Takatori, Mayumi Gojo, Takafumi Iwasaki, YOFFY, IMAJO, Ken'ichirou Ooishi)
[More members of the ever-expanding Project.R came pouring in to fill the stage! Ooishi couldn't answer when Shocker asked how many members they're up to now; "Better figure it out soon, you've got a live coming up!" quipped Shocker, referring to the February "Go-onger" concert announced the day before.]
ENCORE 29. Himitsu Sentai Goranger (Goranger end): Isao Sasaki and all cast
[After Isao Sasaki belted out the first verse, Aniki grabbed the first few lines of the second verse, delivering them in a hip-wigglin' Sasaki imitation that had the big guy helpless with laughter once he got the mike back!]

It really was outstanding. All the insert songs were a fantastic surprise, from the very start--you could almost feel a physical shock wave through the crowd with the first few notes of "Miyo!! Goranger"! Am disappointed about no DVDs this time...but the good news is, Super Sentai Spirits concerts are likely to be held more often than every two years from now on.

:( So no CDs either? O_O Oh well, if there's an SSS next year hopefully either a) I'll be able to get tickets b)DVDs will be released. On another note, more insert songs is great news! Who knows, maybe next SSS may have Battle Fever Dai Shutsugeki by Ichiro Mizuki on the list....that would be cool...

Hey, ever check your PMs? I sent a PM asking you a question

Y'know, I just saw the comment you made as user TheRantingRocker on a YouTube SSS Flashman video: "2008 was not released on DVD but there will be a SSS 2009 according to anisoncentral's owner Judith." I have NEVER said that. And since Kageyama doesn't have a time machine to ferry video cameras back through time to film SSS 2008, I've got to wonder if this is something else you've made up.
